Abstract

993,868. Brake adjusting devices. F. A. E. PORSCHE. July 9, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 26193/62. Heading F2E. An automatic adjusting mechanism for calliper-type disc brakes comprises a friction ring 24 slidably mounted on a guide bolt 18 secured to a brake-operating cylinder wall 28 of the brake calliper housing 7, 8 and contacting frictionally the walls of an inner bore 17 of the brake applying piston 14 acting on friction members 9, 10 of the brake, in which the return path of the friction ring 24 is larger than the brake clearance to permit displacement of the disc 3 when cornering the vehicle, the return path of the piston being opposed by the action of an equalization spring member 27. A supporting ring 26 is retained between a collar 25 on the guide bolt 18 and an abutment member 29, the clearance s denoting the normal brake lining clearance and the distance a denoting the clearance provided to allow for disc displacement when the vehicle is being cornered. If the deviation of the position of the brake disc 3 is larger than the play s, then the friction ring 24 abuts against the supporting ring 26 against the force of the equalization spring 27 in the direction of the abutment thereof. The distance a between the supporting ring 26 and the abutment member 29, which is decreased during this operation, is so dimensioned that it corresponds to the maximum possible brake disc variation or deviation. The opposite acting piston arranged within the brake calliper half 7 remains unaffected by this displacement operation and remains stationary. After the vehicle has been driven through the curve and moves along approximately straight road section, the brake disc 3 returns to the normal position. Fig. 2 shows the brake released condition when the brake disc distorts to the full line position shown and where the linings are badly worn.
