Abstract

Wooden poles or like wooden members 1 erected in earth are preserved from rot at earth level by removing the earth, applying a preparation of creosote 2, applying a bandage 4 and replacing the earth. The bandage preferably comprises polythene-coated hessian having a reinforced edge 5 tightly applied, polythene face inwards, and nailed on both inner and outer edges, the outer face being then coated with creosote or bitumastic. Suitable creosote preparations are (1) A soft gel comprising tar acidfree creosote mixed in a colloid mill with an aqueous solution of casein borax and "Teepol" (Registered Trade Mark) and subsequently <PICT:0937744/IV(a)/1> mixed with additional creosote and ethyl cellulose. (2) A creosote paste containing acid-free creosote, a wetting agent such as "Fixanol C" (Registered Trade Mark) and kieselguhr. (3) A stiff gel comprising creosote thickened with ethyl cellulose and containing "Fixanol C" (Registered Trade Mark). The creosote preparation may be stored in a sealed polythene bag from which it is applied by insertion of the bag in a "grease-gun" having a plunger and a spike to pierce the bag.
