Abstract

An unsaturated polyester resin composition which can be cured without shrinking comprises:- (a) 10 to 70% (by weight of the total organic material) of at least one monomer containing a vinyl group; (b) at least one unsaturated polyester resin having a bromine number greater than 6; (c) 3 to 30% of a saturated polyester plasticizer which is miscible with the uncured resin but not completely miscible with the cured resin and (d) a redox catalyst system. Optional ingredients are accelerators, inhibitors and fillers. Particular compounds exemplified are:- unsaturated polyester from maleic acid and 1,2-propanediol with or without phthalic acid; comonomers styrene and vinyl toluene; saturated polyester plasticizers derived from adipic acid and propylene or butylene glycol; redox catalysts; mixtures of benzoyl or 4,41-dichlorodibenzoyl peroxide and a secondary or tertiary amine (e.g. diisopropylol-p-toluidine, dimethyl-p-toluidine and dimethyl aniline), and/or an amine salt and/or an alpha-amino or -hydroxy sulphone; accelerators heavy metal compounds with a labile halogen atom; inhibitor hydroquinone; fillers quartz, stone, glass powder, barium sulphate, metal and metalloid oxides and paraffin wax.
