[Also in Group VIII] In a garment waistband comprising an elastic core in a textile sheath 6 secured against the inner face of the garment 2 adjacent the folded edge 2a, the contractile strength of the core is greater at the margin 4a adjacent the folded edge 2a than at the margin 5a. The core may comprise a single strip of sheet rubber which gradually increases in thickness towards the edge 4a. In a modification, the thickness at the edge 4a is increased by folding the edge of the rubber strip. The core in Fig. 2 consists of two abutting or slightly spaced rubber strips 4, 5, the upper strip 4 being initially thicker and wider than the strip 5 and being attached to the sheath under the higher tension. The strips are attached to the sheath by transverse stripes ST of adhesive. In a modification the strips 4, 5 are of the same thickness but of inherently different contractile strengths. In another embodiment the core comprises elastic cords or filaments extending lengthwise of the band, those nearer the outer margin being thicker and more closely spaced.
