Abstract

936,757. Temperature determination. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 8, 1961 [May 11, 1960], No. 16629/61. Class 40 (3). A device for measuring the intensity of a radiation source moving across its field of view, and more particularly a hot axlebox detector, comprises two radiation sources 2, 3, connected in opposition and associated with a single optical system in such a way that two successive output pulses are obtained when a source passes the device. The optical system may be a concave reflector 4 and radiation from a hot axle box 1 moving in a direction 6 results in a first output pulse from one detector followed by a second pulse of opposite polarity from the other. The peak-to-peak amplitude is a measure of axlebox temperature and a device 5 indicates when the temperature exceeds a permissible value. A numerical count of signals may also be made. Variations in background radiation affect both detectors similarly and are substantially cancelled out.
