936,714. Continuous casting - machines. ELTHERMA A.G. May 9, 1962, No. 17799/62. Class 83 (1). In a continuous casting-machine with a reciprocating mould pressure is applied to the shrinkage gap between mould and casting when they are moving in opposite directions in order to reduce friction between these parts during this period. Pressure air or protective gas is applied to a chamber 18 at the exit end of the mould from a pressure chamber 22, and a reduced pressure is applied to the chamber 18 by a vacuum chamber 20 during the period when the mould and casting move in the same direction, so as to influence the casting into engagement with the mould and increase the cooling effect. The changeover valve 30 may be mechanically coupled to the mould oscillating mechanism, or otherwise operated in synchronism with the mould reciprocation cycle. In a modification, Fig. 2, the chamber 18 is divided into three sub-chambers 34, 36, 38, and to decrease still further the friction between mould and casting, high-frequency pulsations are imposed upon the pressure-reduced pressure cycle by an acoustical generator 56 operating a diaphragm 62. The pulsation may be also applied to a chamber 66 at the entrance end of the mould. The vibrations may be induced by a generator coupled mechanically to the pouring spout.
