Abstract

935,046. Continuous-casting machines. E. A. OLSSON. Sept. 6, 1961 [Sept. 7, 1960], No. 32074/61. Class 83 (1). A method of continuous casting using a reciprocating mould comprises setting a free velocity of the mould in the casting direction substantially equal to a maximum casting velocity of the ingot and allowing movement of the mould in the casting direction at casting velocity below the maximum to be governed by the resistance, i.e. friction and adhesion resistance against relative movement between the mould and ingot. The mould frame 2 is supported on pistons in air or liquid cylinders 3. An electromagnetic valve 4 actuated through limit switches 7 connects the cylinders to atmosphere or a liquid reservoir via a relief valve 5, or to a source of pressure medium via a valve 6. The valve 5 is adjusted so that the free velocity of the frame in the downward direction, i.e. its velocity if there were no resistance due to the ingot does not substantially exceed the maximum casting velocity.
