936,585. Gear - cutting; gear - finishing. DRUMMOND BROS. Ltd. Dec. 14, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 31727/60. Class 83 (3). In a hobbing machine or a gear-shaping machine using a rack or pinion-cutter for finishing a series of rough-cut gears, means 23 are provided for locating a workpiece with respect to the positions of its cut teeth. The work can be held loosely by an hydraulicallyoperated centre 4 so that the teeth can be positioned, can be held firmly by increased pressure, or can be clamped fast by an hydraulically-operated centre 3. The locating means 23 comprises a gear having spaced rings of teeth. It is mounted on an arm 8 pressed forwardly by a spring 27 in a sleeve 7 which can be swung about an axis 6. The locating gear can be clamped by a block 24 attached to a fluid-pressure piston. The arm 7 is located in its operative position by a stop 35, movements being controlled by switches actuated by a rod 60 and plungers 55. In operation, the first workpiece of a series is located relatively to the cutter by bringing the cutter into mesh with the gear while the latter is free to rotate. The gear is then clamped fast and the locating gear is swung into mesh with the gear. Cutting then ensues. When cutting is complete, the cutter is withdrawn, the locating gear is clamped against rotation, the work is released for free rotation and the locating gear is swung away. Thus, when a new gear is positioned, the locating gear represents the correct relative meshing position of the cutter. If the locating gear swings into a position against the tops of the work-gear teeth the arm 60 operates a switch 63 and the arm is swung away. It is then swung back again until correct meshing occurs. The locating gear may mesh with a gear other than that to be cut and teeth may then be rough-cut or finish-cut on the same workpiece.
