Abstract
895,949. Gear-cutting. SYKES Ltd., W. E. Sept. 9, 1958 [Sept. 12, 1957], No. 28810/57. Class 83 (3). A gear-cutting machine comprises fluidcontrolled means 13 for adjustably linking a tail-stock 42 to the cutter head 1. In operation, with the saddle 2, carrying the tail-stock assembly, in a withdrawn position, fluid pressure means are operated to clamp a gear 30 between centres 38, 40. The centre 40 is carried on a slide 8 urged towards the head 1 by the fluid-pressure operated wedge 13. The wedge 13 reacts against a stop 16 on a support 9 attached to the cutter-head and carrying a stop 20 which determines the position of the centre 40 in its innermost position. When the saddle 2 has been fed in increments to the final cutting position, the pressure to the wedge 13 is increased to hold the tail-stock firmly. When the teeth have been cut on the gear, the saddle and centres 38, 40 are withdrawn. The gear 30 is retained on a magazine 28 by spring clips 31. A piston 24 is then raised, by fluid-pressure, to carry the magazine 28 and a supporting sleeve 21 upwardly until a rack 34 engages a gear 35 on the sleeve. When the rack is moved hydraulically to index the magazine, a fresh workpiece is moved into position. The magazine is then lowered and a new cycle commences. The magazine may be automatically loaded and unloaded by conveyer means.
