Abstract

942,107. Gear-finishing. F. HURTH, and H. HURTH. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 4051/62. Heading B3K. A method of bringing a gear into mesh with a shaving tool, &c., comprises relatively rotating the gear and tool slowly until they mesh, and then stopping the rotation by a sensing means. The chamfered tool 12 is urged axially by a spring 17 or hydraulic means. The tool spindle 13 is rotated by a motor 20 and can be prevented from moving axially by an eccentric 22 rotated by a lever 21 or by an automatic hydraulic device. When the tool is advanced towards a gear and engages it incorrectly, the tool is moved axially causing the motor to be braked so that the tool is held fast while the work is rotated slowly. As soon as correct meshing occurs, the tool moves forward into machining position and the brake is released. Alternatively, the work may be braked and the tool rotated. In a modification, the tool-holder carries a feeler 39, Fig. 3, which can move axially to operate a switch 42, and can tilt to operate a switch 41, which switches control slow rotation of the workpiece. When a gear has been finished by rotation of the tool or work, the tool is moved radially until the feeler 39 is moved to actuate the switch 41. The workpiece then rotates slowly until the feeler drops into a tooth gap. The work is then braked and the tool withdrawn axially. During engagement of the tool and gear, the switch 42 is operative. The end of the feeler 39 may be shaped as in Fig. 4 so that only one switch 43 is necessary. The gears may be supplied from a magazine.
