[Also in Group XI] A furnace for carrying out the reduction of metal oxides, e.g. aluminium or titanium oxides, to the pure metal comprises a metal shell 60 lined throughout with a refractory lining 62 and provided with cooling coils 64, the furnace being divided into a reduction chamber 66, a condensing chamber 68 and a gas outlet 70. At the top of the reduction chamber, a burner is provided which comprises a combustion flame across which an electric discharge takes place, the discharge further heating the products of the chemical combustion.
