Abstract
In the growth reaction between a low molecular weight alkyl aluminium compound and a gaseous olefin carried out in at least one batch reaction zone at elevated temperature and pressure, the reactants are introduced into the reaction zone, circulated through an external heat exchanger at high velocity until they reach reaction temperature, the heat exchanger is then converted to a cooling zone through which the contents of the reaction zone are continuously circulated to remove exothermic heat of reaction thus providing a homogeneous reaction mass, intimate liquid-gas contact and maximum reaction rate, and removing the reaction product from the reaction zone. Preferably a plurality of reaction zones is used. Gaseous olefin is removed from the product in flash zones of reduced pressure, the liquid product from the second flash zone being the required alkyl aluminium growth product. Flow diagrams of the process are given.
