Abstract

Phosphorus sulphides are made by reacting phosphorus with sulphur at an elevated temperature and, if desired, in an atmosphere inert to reactants and reaction products, in a reaction zone surrounded by a jacket through which, throughout the reaction, a gas stream is made to flow at a reduced pressure with respect to the pressure prevailing in the reaction zone to act as a heat transfer agent to keep the reaction zone at a temperature between the boiling point and solidification point of the reaction mixture. The gas stream may be of air, CO2 or N2 and it may contain CO2 snow, steam, or water mist. Combustion gases, preferably those which contain no free oxygen, may also be used. Gases may be circulated by suction and the heating may be reversed to cooling within a few seconds. Fig. 1 (not shown) shows a suitable reactor for continuous operation and Fig. 3 (not shown) shows a reactor for discontinuous operation. Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown) relate to methods for rapid reversal of cooling and heating of the reactor.
