Abstract

The invention comprises a continuous process for the halogenation of gaseous olefines by introducing olefine and chlorine, bromine or mixtures thereof into a reaction zone provided with interior heat exchange means having a large expanse of cooling surface per volume of free reactor space, withdrawing heat products at a rate such as to maintain the interior of the reaction zone at a temperature below the boiling point of the product dihalide, whilst maintaining an entirely fluid phase, and establishing contact between olefine, halogen and product dihalide while the latter flows downwardly, as a discontinuous phase, over the surface of the heat exchange means. Advantageously the dihalide is contacted in countercurrent with gaseous olefine to remove the dissolved halogen. Two zones may be used, a lower packed zone below the reaction zone, as in the apparatus of Specification 804,996, [Group III]. The process is applicable to the bromination of ethylene, but also to the bromination of other normally gaseous olefines, e.g. propylene, and chlorination or joint chlorination and bromination of olefines. An example of the bromination of ethylene to ethylene dibromide, with description of the plant and operating data is given; the process may be made automatic by maintaining ethylene pressure at a predetermined value, and flow rate in excess of consumption to give a constant excess in the exit gases, with a constant bromine feed rate; any fluctuations in this are compensated for with automatic adjustment of the ethylene flow.
