Abstract

935,937. Valves. LEONARD VALVE CO. June 2, 1962, No. 21352/62. Class 135. A mixing valve has a base member 11, Fig. 1, with cold and hot inlets 2, 3 leading into chambers 24, 27, respectively, each via a non-return valve 31 or 32 which prevent back flow to the inlets and automatically shut-off the water supply when a central unit 12 is removed from the base 11; the non-return valves may be manually closed. The chambers 24, 27 lead into a mixing chamber 50 through passages 100, 106 and ports 114, 115, respectively, which chamber 50 opens into an outlet chamber 22 having two opposed outlets one of which is plugged and the other of which opens to a shower nozzle through an " on-off " valve. The control unit 12 embodies a shaft 51 to which is splined a handle 151 having a temperature indicating pointer 133, a bracket 143 that co-operates with stops 130, 131, and an aesthetic skirt 134; the shaft 51, Fig. 4, is journalled in the unit 12 in which is formed the mixing chamber 50 and into which the shaft 51 depends. A double-coiled bimetallic thermal-element 56 connects the shaft 51 to a valve actuator 80 embodying a pinion 81 that engages rack teeth 117 on a movable piston-closure member 116, Fig. 1, which determines the degree of opening of ports 114, 115 and hence the outlet water temperature. The passages 100, 106 and member 116 are part of the unit 12 being secured thereto by a bridge 91 to which is also attached a bearing member 120, Fig. 4, for the valve actuator 80. If the temperature of the water in the chamber 50, Fig. 1, differs from the temperature set by the handle 151 then the thermal element 56 rotates the actuator 80 to slide the closure member 116 to adjust the areas of ports 114, 115.
