Abstract

885,752. Valves. MEYNELL & SONS Ltd. Dec. 9, 1959 [June 3, 1959], No. 291/59. Class 135. A mixing valve has a base 10, Fig. 2, incorporating hot and cold water inlets 11, 12 and a mixing chamber 104 with a bi-conical valve 14 that controls the entry of cold and hot water into the top and bottom, respectively, of the chamber; the valve 14 is of resilient heat-resisting material, e.g. synthetic rubber. The chamber communicates via passages 105 with a distributing chamber 212 under the control of a lift valve 192 having a lost-motion connection with the valve 14; the chamber 212 has two outlets in the base 10, only one of which is used, the outlets opening to the chamber through arcuate ports. The head 22 is turned to unseat the valve 192 whilst a spring 18 keeps the valve 14 in the position shown so that cold water only enters the chambers 104 and 212; continued rotation of the head 22 causes the bottom of the stem 194 of valve 192 to lift valve 14 and open the chambers to the inflow of hot water. Manipulation of the head 22 enables the amount of hot and cold water entering the chambers to be adjusted whereby the temperature of the outlet water is determined. In each inlet is a safety valve 231, 232, both being mounted on a common stem 23 and the area of the valve in the cold water being greater than that in the hot water inlet so that in the event of failure of the cold water supply the valve 231 will seat and prevent any further supply of hot water to the mixing valve.
