Abstract

935,332. Pneumatic tyres. HERCULES POWDER CO. Aug. 17, 1959, No. 28109/59. Class 144 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A hollow body 1, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of axially aligned ovaloid elements 8 and filament windings 6 therebetween, the filament windings forming a helical pattern continuing from one of the ovaloid elements over the other and back again. Although the ovaloid elements 8 are shown as being spaced apart by a cylindrical body portion 9 this may be omitted and the ovaloid elements 8 may jointly define a flattened sphere having no cylindrical joining portion. Such a body, when the windings 6 are of flexible filaments or bands set in a flexible binder, can serve as a complete tyrelike wheel for aircraft. Likewise, flexible rollers can be made out of long cylindrical bodies. The windings 6, and any girth windings 25 thereon, may comprise fibrous material and a settable binder to bind together the fibres of each layer as well as those of superposed layers. The fibrous material may be of glass and may be in the form of a band. Alternatively, rubber or the like may be used. The binder may be an epoxy resin. Beneath the windings 6 there may be end fittings 4, Fig. 5, for the ovaloid elements, these end fittings having a neck portion 5. Specifications 803,270 and 929,236 are referred to.
