Abstract

1,020,023. Coiling; making rocket motor casings and pressure vessels. CONTRAVES A.G. Dec. 31, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 49028/62. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Divisions F2 and F3] A container for media at high pressure is made by placing rolled strips 11, 12 &c. of high quality spring steel lengthwise of a rotatable mandrel with their adjacent edges in contact and then winding steel wire under tension around the strips, adjacent turns 21, 22 &c. being bonded together by a metal adhesive, e.g. an epoxy resin composition cured by infra-red radiation. Further alternating layers of metal strip and wire are built up until the casing has the required thickness. Preferably end pieces 31 having a stepped rim are detachably fitted to the ends of the mandrel before building up the casing, the mandrel afterwards being dismantled within the finished chamber. The stepped formation of the end piece may be on the inner surface as in Fig. 1 or on the external surface. Alternatively the end piece 32 may be shaped as in Fig. 2 (not shown) with tapered seatings 320, the metal strips 11 being reduced at the ends to fit without overlapping. Instead of metal, the strips may be made of drawn glass filaments placed side by side lengthwise of the strip and stuck together. A drawn glass filament is then wrapped around the strips in place of the steel wire.
