Abstract

An abrasive chip having a volume of 1/16 to 8 cubic inches for use in wet-tumbling procedures comprises a uniform mixture of from 15 to 50 parts of synthetic resin and from 50 to 85 parts of particulate abrasive, e.g. aluminium oxide, quartz, grastone cottrell, talc, tripoli, pyrophyllite and gypsum. Synthetic resins specified are polyester resins, phenolformaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, epoxy resins, polyvinyl chloride, nylons, silicones and synthetic rubbers. Also present in the mixtures may be diatomaceous earth and calcium carbonate.ALSO:An abrasive chip having a volume of 1/16 to 8 cubic inches for use in wet-tumbling procedures comprises a uniform mixture of from 15 to 50 parts of synthetic resin and from 50 to 85 parts of particulate abrasive, e.g. aluminium oxide, quartz, graystone cottrell, talc, limestone, tripoli, pyrophyllite and gypsum. Synthetic resins specified are polyester resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, epoxy resins, polyvinyl chloride, nylons, silicones and synthetic rubbers. In specified processes: (a) a polyester-styrene mixture is compounded with aluminium oxide, benzoyl or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and diatomaceous earth and moulded into chips with heating; (b) as in (a) but using talc as the abrasive; (c) as in p (a) but using a mixture of the diglycidol ether of bisphenol A and m-phenylene diamine as the resin; (d) as in (a) but using a furfuryl alcohol solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin; (e) as in (a) but using an aqueous solution of a phenol-form; and (f) a polyvinyl chloridedioctyl phthalate plastisol containing calcium carbonate, an abrasive and a tin heat stabilizer is heated in a pellet mould.
