Abstract
934,973. Respiratory appliances. J. J. McCLEAN. June 5, 1962 [June 13, 1961], No. 21767/62. Class 81 (2). A resuscitating apparatus comprises a main container 1 divided into two compartments 2A, 3A by a flexible diaphragm 8 which is moved to and fro by respiratory action of the operator, using a mouthpiece 16. The resultant pumping action of the diaphragm on the air in the chamber 3A causes it to be circulated, to and from the patient's lungs, using mouthpiece 41, through a closed circuit system comprising a delivery tube 25 and a return tube 24, the latter incorporating a carbon dioxide absorber 30. Non-return valves 37, 40 ensure a correct circulation of the gas and a relief valve 26 may be fitted to avoid the building up of excessive pressure. Oxygen is admitted to the system from a container 48 through a plunger-operated valve 49 and preferably the compartment 3A is filled with oxygen, by this means, before resuscitation is commenced.
