Abstract

An oleaginous composition comprises an oil and a phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon further reacted with urea. The hydrocarbon may be any hydrocarbon material or mixtures thereof, brightstocks and polyolefins being amongst those specified, and polyisobutylene being preferred. The oleaginous liquid may be any animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic oil, including fuel oils. Synthetic oils mentioned are diesters and complex esters, and other oils specified are castor oil, fish oil, oxidized mineral oil, spindle oil and naphtha. Optional additives referred to are a - and b -naphthylamine, phenothiazine and alkyl substituents thereof, alkyl phenols (e.g. 2,4-dimethyl-6-tertiary octyl phenol), bisphenols, substituted diphenylamines (e.g. di-octyl diphenylamine), alkyl- or aryl-phosphates and phosphites, sulphurized sperm oil and other sulphurized hydrocarbons, metal dialkyl dithiophosphates, polyiso-olefins, degraded rubbery copolymers and copolymers of (1) an alkyl ester of an a -b unsaturated carboxyli acid (e.g. acrylates, methacrylates, itaconates, fumarates and maleates), with (2) a polymerizable monomer containing an oxygen- or nitrogen-containing polar group (e.g. unsaturated nitriles, N-vinyl butyrolactams such as N-vinyl pyrollidone, pyridines, half-esters of maleic acid in which the remaining acid group is reacted with an alkylene oxide such as ethylene oxide, or maleic anhydride). In the case of lubricating compositions other additives mentioned are phenates and alkylated phenates and sulphonates.
