Abstract
934,737. Sampling liquids. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 17, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961], No. 29342/61. Class 106 (5). Samples of radio-active liquid are drawn at intervals from a main stream 8 by means of air pulses from a pump 5 forcing liquid into a collection chamber 10 which is emptied through a syphon 19 after a spot sample has been extracted from the accumulation. Liquid from the stream 8 enters a pulse chamber 2 by way of an orifice 7 and, when the chamber is supplied with a pulse of compressed air from pump 5, some of the liquid escapes through the orifice 7 and some is ejected into the collection chamber 10 by way of delivery chamber 3 and delivery pipe 9. Collected samples are mixed by a stirrer 14 and excess liquid is drained by overflow pipe 13. A spot sample is collected from the chamber 10 by means of the evacuated bottle technique described in Specification 776,617. To clear the chamber 10 a manual pump 21 is operated to reduce the pressure in tank 20 causing the syphon 19 to be primed and discharge the surplus from chamber 10 into the waste pipes 16, 17. The level of the accumulated samples is monitored by an indicator 23. An inlet pipe 11 allows the chambers 2, 3 and 10 to be flushed clean. A practical form of the invention is described with reference to Fig. 3, not shown, and has a containment vessel through which the stream 8 flows and which may be emptied by steam and flushed. The apparatus is contained within a biological screen.
