Abstract

Yarn or tow is stretched at -20 DEG to 180 DEG C. by means of two frusto-conical rollers 3 and 4 arranged side by side with the smaller diameters at the same end and each having a helical groove, the yarn or tow passing to and fro from one roller to the other in the direction of increasing roller diameter. Smooth, fluted, or longitudinally grooved nip rollers may be used as feed and delivery rollers. The yarn or tow may be passed through a cooling bath before stretching. The large diameter ends of the rollers may be heated or a hot bath situated therebetween to effect heat setting. Polyethylene terephthalate tow may be drawn <PICT:0934383/IV(a)/1> using rollers immersed in water containing crushed ice and the stretched tow immersed in boiling water to produce a shrinkage of 75%.
