Abstract

934,358. Indicators for aligning tractors and trailers. J. I. RUSSELL. Aug. 25, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 18501/60. Class 79(5). A device for assisting the coupling of a tractor to a trailer comprises a sighting member 26 providing sighting posts 31, 32 and having a split base ring 27 which may be pushed over the tractor ball 23 of a ball and socket coupling, and a single post sighting member 34 which may be supported by a clip 35 engaging a rib 33 extending from the trailer ball socket 24. In operation, the sighting members are mounted as shown on the respective coupling halves, and the tractor is backed so that the knob at the top of the member 34 mounted on the trailer appears and is maintained between the two upright tipped posts 31, 32 of the member 26, thus enabling the vehicles to be brought into near proximity for coupling. Other forms of bases for the sighting members are described and shown for engaging different forms and sizes of coupling members.
