A mechanism for applying a wrapper to a set-up box wherein the wrapper is secured to the box by adhesive only at the edges (loose-wrap) or by an overall coat of adhesive (tight-wrap) comprises means for conveying set-up boxes along a path beneath two reciprocable plungers selectively operable to move the box into registering engagement with the wrapper. When the plunger has deposited the box on a wrapper a transfer mechanism moves the box and wrapper to a box-wrapping machine. Blanks from a stack b erected by a staying machine S pass to a conveyer BC, beneath a registering device R to another conveyer BCi where the leading box is positioned beneath a plunger P 2 of a second registering device R 2 . A wrapper W is fed from a gluer G to a suction conveyer C at the end of which a stop E registers the wrapper beneath the plunger P 2 , the box being held above the wrapper between coil springs and against another stop. The plunger P 2 is moved downwardly by members 40, 41 driven through a clutch 42 from a shaft 43. This clutch is connected by a tube 43a to a further clutch 44 which operates the plunger P; engagement of one clutch ensures disengagement of the other clutch. It is preferred to use plunger P for tight-wrap work and plunger Pz for loosewrap work. The transfer mechanism T, similar to that described in Specification 748,753, comprises members 50 reciprocated in supports 54 and carrying fingers 51 which grip the box in co-operation with stops 53. The stops are adjustable. Further stops 85 prevent the box being pushed off the conveyer C. Suction members 56 operated by cams 75 hold the edge of the wrapper above the level of a platen 57 while the box and wrapper are moved off the conveyer by the transfer mechanism. Projections 87 on the cams engage the end walls of deep boxes when the boxes are transferred and ensure that they are horizontal. U.S.A. Specifications 2,074,561 and 2,144,338 also are referred to.
