Abstract

934,082. Cartridge-operated fastener driving tools. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 10, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 28967/61. Class 119. Relates to a cartridge operated fastener driving tool in which the driving force of the explosion is transmitted to the fastener through the intermediary of a piston member slidable in the tool barrel, and to means for yieldingly arresting the piston member in the event of over-penetration of the fastener. According to the invention the piston 3 has a tapered portion 20 adapted to strike against a complementary tapered bore 21 of an abutment member 14 which together with a metal washer 13 and an annular member 10 of rubber or other elastomer, form an arrester assembly held in position by a muzzle member 11. A striker member 2 is also slidable in the barrel 1 and a removable breech piece 4 encloses a cage 6 housing spring-pressed balls 7 adapted to grip the shank 5 of the member 2 to prevent accidental firing. The balls 7 are released by means of release balls 8 engaging the lower edge of the cage 6 and actuated by a sleeve 9.
