Abstract

901,853. Firearms; cartridge-actuated tools. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 26, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6848/60. Classes 92 and 119. [Also in Group XXIX] Relates to a firearm or an explosively-actuated stud-driving tool having a piston disposed in a cylinder and actuated by the fluid pressure of the explosion gases, the piston being used to drive a stud or alternatively the explosion gases from a firearm barrel being fed into the cylinder and the movement of the piston being used for feeding cartridges or ejecting spent cartridges. According to the invention a spring-loaded valve is disposed in the cylinder and is movable through a predetermined stroke to an open position wherein the interior of the cylinder is vented to atmosphere, the length of the stroke, the inertia of the valve, the effective area of the valve and the restoring force of the valve spring being so selected that the valve is operative to vent only when a predetermined integral of pressure and time has been exceeded. In one form, the piston 11, Fig. 1, is disposed in the cylinder 10 having a passage 14 for entry of the explosion gases and vents 28 to atmosphere. A bore 23 in a fixed partition member 19 carries a valve member comprising a stem 24 and a body portion 26 urged against the member 19 by a spring 27. In another embodiment, the valve member 124, 126, Fig. 2, is carried in a bore in the piston 110, differential movement between piston and valve resulting in venting the cylinder via ports 120, 128 in the piston and cylinder respectively.
