933,869. Comminuting apparatus. MADDOX, HILL Ltd. Feb. 15, 1961 [Feb. 16, 1960], No. 5448/60. Class 59. [Also in Groups XXIII and XXIX] A comminuting apparatus for solid food waste from a dish-washing receptacle (see Group XXIII), includes a rotary element driven through pulleys by the motor driving a water circulating device and helical gears, the axial thrust of which closes the outlet valve (see Group XXIX) from the receptacle to the comminuting apparatus while the motor is operating. Solid food waste carried away with waste from a dish-washing receptacle 1 through opening 12 is comminuted between horizontal fins on cutter ring 15 and slotted cutter plate 14 and passes into chamber 16 from which it is discharged to waste through outlet 17 by centrifugal pump impeller 18 which is integral with cutter plate 14. Hollow shaft 13 carrying cutter plate 14 is driven through pulleys 19, 31 by a motor 29. Gear 21 integral with pulley 19 drives helical gears 24, 25 through gear 22. The axial thrust of helical gears 24, 25 closes valve 32 so long as the motor 29, which also drives the water circulating device 4, is running.
