978,458. Comminuting apparatus. E. G. IRWIN. Aug. 19, 1963, No. 32743/63. Heading B2A. The motor 2 of a portable waste-disposal unit, operated with a flow of water through a hopper 1 containing waste in which grinding is effected by the interaction of cutters in relative rotary motion, 'is mounted axially parallel with, and in a casing 3 alongside, the hopper and effects drive through a V-belt pulley arrangement 26 below the motor and hopper; the motor circuit includes an overload cut-out 29, and a lid switch for a hopper-lid 9 which closes the motor circuit only when the lid is closed. A cutter ring 13 having cutters at angles of 120 degrees around its periphery co-operates with a double-bladed impeller 15 having hard-tipped blades 17 secured on a shaft 16. In operation, an inlet 4 in the casing 3 is connected to a cold water tap, waste is scraped into the hopper, the lid is shut and held closed by spring pressure and the motor is started. Comminuted material passes out of the grinding zone through a slotted plate 19, into the chamber 21 and to the drain via the outlet 5.
