933,844. Variable focal length objectives. CARL ZEISS-STIFTUNG, [trading asC. ZEISS, [firm of]]. Aug. 28, 1961 [Aug. 30, 1960], No. 30869/61. Class 97 (1). A photographic objective of variable focal length consists of three lens groups A, B, C, each of several elements of which the first A has collective, the second B dispersive and the third C collective refractive power, wherein the alteration of the focal length is produced by displacement of the dispersive group B and wherein simultaneously one or more elements of one or both of the other lens groups A, C are displaced in such a way that during the variation of the focal length the image position for a stationary object remains constant. This objective is characterized by the combination of the following characteristics : (a) the collective group A consists of a meniscus-shaped dispersive element, an asymmetrically biconvex collective element and a meniscus-shaped collective element, the said elements being bent in such a way that for each of them the relation bf-br > 0 is valid; (b) the dispersive group B consists of two asymmetrical dispersive elements of which the second is a doublet and both elements are bent in such a way that for each of them the relation bf-br > 0 is valid; (c) within the third collective group C there stands the diaphragm and this group consists of at least four elements of which the one immediately following the diaphragm is dispersive ; the elements standing in front of the diaphragm, the focal length of which is numerically smaller than five times the overall length of the third group C, are bent in such a way that for each of them the relation bf-br > 0 is valid wherein bf designates the refractive power of the front and br the refractive power of the rear glass-air surface of the element concerned ; (d) the sum of the refractive powers of the two surfaces bordering upon the air space containing the diaphragm is negative.
