933,569. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Feb. 13, 1962, No. 5472/62. Class 112. [Also in Group XXXIV] In a sewing machine adapted to produce a line of overedge stitching and a parallel line of through-and-through stitching, connections are taken from a main drive-shaft within the machine housing for respectively actuating a rockable arm carrying a pair of needles, overedge loopers co-operating with one needle, and a four-motion looper co-operating with the other needle. Frames, lubricating, work supports.-The main frame 10, which is relatively low, supports all the mechanism and encloses most of the driving connections for the operated parts. A removable cover 11, a bottom plate 12 and an internal wall 10a provide two lubricant-containing compartments 13 and 14. A main driving- shaft 15 actuates various connecting rods provided with respective fingers 30, 42, 55, 74 which dip into the lubricant to produce a lubricating spray or mist. Shaft 15 extends beneath a work-supporting member 17 which is swingable outwardly for providing access to the underneath parts. The throat plate 33 is formed with a notch 56a accommodating a fixed worktrimming blade 57a. Multi-needle machines; stitch forming ; thread controlling; work trimming.-An oscillating needle bar 25, which carries an overedge needle 23 and a through-and-through needle 24, is fixed to one end of a shaft, the other end of which is coupled by a crank 27 to a connecting-rod 28 actuated by shaft 15. An under looper 34, cooperating with needle 23, is fixed to one end of an upwardly-inclined reciprocating shaft 35, the other end of which is connected by a link 36 to one arm 37 of a bell-crank lever pivoted at 38, the other arm 39 being coupled to a connecting- rod 40 actuated by shaft 15. An overedge looper 43, which co-operates with needle 23 and looper 34 and which may be either threaded or unthreaded, is fixed to one end of a reciprocating and oscillating shaft 44 journalled in a sleeve 45 formed with an arcuate slot in which is slidably disposed a block fixed to shaft 44. The other end of the latter is provided with a pair of shoulders 48 which embrace the end of one arm 50 of a bell-crank lever pivoted at 51, the other arm 52 being coupled to a connecting-rod 53 actuated by shaft 15. The work is trimmed in advance of needle 23 by the fixed blade 57a cooperating with a blade 57 adjustably mounted in a head 58 at the end of an arm 59 on one end of an oscillating shaft 60, an arm 61 on the other end of which is coupled to a connecting-rod 62 actuated by shaft 15. A four-motion looper 64 co-operating with needle 24 is fixed to one end of a reciprocating and oscillating shaft 66. A pair of shoulders 67, provided at the other end of shaft 66, embraces the end of an arm 69 depending from an oscillating shaft 70 which carries a second arm 71 coupled to a connecting rod 72 actuated by shaft 15. A sleeve 77, slidably but non-rotatably mounted on shaft 66, carries an arm 84 which is coupled by a link 85 to the arm 61 on the trimmer-actuating shaft 60. Thread from cones 90 to 94 is led through tensioners 96. Thread N from cone 90 passes to needle 23 via the spaced arms of a guide bracket 98 and a guide bracket 100. Thread n from cone 91 passes to the needle 24 via the spaced arms of the bracket 98 and a guide eye 101 on the needle bar 25. A cam-shaped arm 99 rigid with the latter engages the threads N and n between the arms of bracket 98 to serve as a thread take-up and pull-off. Thread u from cone 92 passes to looper 34 via the spaced arms of a guide bracket 102 and via guide brackets 103 and 103a. Thread o from cone 93 passes to looper 43 via the spaced arms of a guide bracket 105 and via a guide tube 107. An arm 104, rigid with the needle bar 25, acts on the threads u and o between the arms of the respective brackets 102 and 105 to act as a thread take-up and pull-off. Thread L from cone 94 passes to the looper 64 via a guide eye 108 on bracket 102, a guide bracket 103, and guide eyes on opposite sides of a slot in a fixed plate 109. A cam 110 on shaft 15 passes, through said slot to act as a take-up and pull-off on thread L. Specification 691,894 is referred to.
