Abstract

1343645 Sewing machine UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO 4 May 1971 [7 May 1970] 12866/71 Heading D1G Needles driving; lubricating (Figure 2) The two needles 22, 23 of a sewing machine are mounted in a carrier 16 having lugs 16a 16b which slide on a guide bar 17 as the carrier is reciprocated thereon by its engagement with a roller (18b, Figure 7 not shown) on an arm 18 secured to a shaft 19 rocked by a drive (20, 21, Figure 3, not shown) from the rotating main shaft 15. The guide bar has an eccentric head (17a Figure 7) by which it is adjustably secured in the machine. Radial oil passages (17g) in the bar are fed from an axially disposed wick (17d) which co-operates with a second wick 17f which leads from the head of the guide bar to the oil reservoir formed in the main housing 10. The machine disclosed provides a "safety stitch" seam comprising of overedge stitches provided by needle 22 co-operating with threaded loopers 26, 27 and type 401 stitches provided by a needle 23 co-operating with a threaded looper 41. Looper drives. Looper 26 is carried on a rod 28 longitudinally reciprocated by linkwork 29a, 29, 31, 32, from the main drive shaft 15. A sleeve (28e Figure 4, not shown) surrounding the shaft has a cam groove (28d) which co-operates with a block (28c) to oscillate the rod 28 as it reciprocates. Looper 27 is carried by a rod 33 reciprocated in a sleeve 34 by linkage 35, 36, 38, 39. Looper 41 is secured to a shaft 42 which is reciprocated by linkage 43, 43a, 45. Thread takeups. Thread 24 for needle 22 passes through guides 56 and is acted on by a take-up member 19a on the oscillating shaft 19. Thread 25 for needle 23 passes from its tensioner between guides 58a where it is subject to the action of a rock member 59 and then through an opening in an adjustable bracket 60 and an opening in an arm 61 secured to the rocking needle carrier actuating arm 18. Threads 24a 24b for loopers 26, 27 respectively pass through openings at the ends of bracket 65, where the lower portion of member 59 performs a take-up action thereon. (For Figures see next page)
