466,656. Sewing - machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Dec. 17, 1936, No. 34660. Convention date, Jan. 25. [Class 112] A chain-stitch machine comprises a driving shaft 7 housed in the overarm 3 and connected to the needle bar 15 by a balanced crank 17, crank-pin 18, and connecting rod 19 coupled to a pin 20 carried by the bar and guided by a slot 25 in the head 4. The boss 27 of the rod 19 bears on a ball 26 pivoted on the crank-pin 18, and its lower end carries a scoop which picks up lubricant from a sump 30. The shaft 7 is connected by a gear train 60, 59, 56 to a shaft 50 under the bed plate 1, the gear 56 dipping into an oil sump 53. The shaft 50 carries a pair of crank heads 65, 66 with a connecting ball crank-pin 67 by which the arm 75 carrying the looper 74 is rocked through linkwork 99, 97, 90, 85. A second shaft 68 coaxial with the shaft 50 is fixed in a socket in the head 65, and imparts to the looper 75 its needle-avoiding movement through an eccentric rod 82 and rocking shaft 77 carrying the stud 76 on which the looper arm 75 pivots. Ball joints are used in the looper mechanism to reduce wear. The upper end of the presser bar 32 slides in a slotted screw bushing 37 and is acted on by a double leaf spring 39, the pressure of which may be adjusted by a set screw 42. The bar is raised by a latch lever 46 having a cam coacting with a stud 49 carried by the bar. The feed dog 102 is vertically adjustable on a feed bar 103, which is reciprocated by a crank-pin 119 on the shaft 68 through linkwork 117, 115, 109. The lift movement is given to the feed dog by an eccentric 121 on the shaft 68, the strap of which is pivoted at 123 to an arm 124 on the feed bar 103. The needle-thread tension device comprises a sleeve 125 guiding a thrust-pin 129 through which an eccentric 128 on the shaft 7 actuates the adjustable tension means 127. The take-up for the looped thread comprises an inclined guard plate 133 to which is fixed a U-shaped wire tongue 136 between which and the plate the thread passes. A rotary cam disc 131 on the shaft 68 projects through a slot in the plate 133 between the limbs of the tongue 136.
