Abstract

449,054. Sewing machines. HANDSCHUH, A., 103, Urbanstrasse, Berlin. July 5, 1935, No. 19186. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 7, 1936.] [Class 112] A sewing - machine is operated with either the needle and the feeddog co-operating to feed the work, or the feed dog alone. In the latter case the work feed movement of the needle is stopped and the timing of the feeddog movement is delayed until the needle is clear of the work. The work feed movement of the needle is furnished by a lever 20 which is reciprocated by a two-piece shaft 18 and lever 27. The needle movement is stopped by a sliding coupling 22, 23. The timing of the feed dog is changed by uncoupling a loose eccentric 3 from a fixed sleeve 7 and turning the latter with the main shaft through 180‹. In order that the machine may be used for zigzag stitching the direction of vibration of the needle bar is controlled by a guide 33 which encloses the needle bar leaving sufficient clearance for the largest amplitude of vibration. The guide 33 is mounted for vertical displacement in the head of the machine. At the top, the guide is slotted at 34 to receive pins 35 and at the bottom it is slotted at 33 to receive pins 37 on the needle-bar. In the former case the needle-bar is capable of vibration in the direction of the work and in the latter case, in a direction at right angles thereto such as is required for zigzag stitching. In a modification a shaft 39 corresponding to the shaft 18 actuates a lever 45 pivoted at 44. The lower lever-arm 46 is slotted and is connected to a link 47 actuating the needle-bar. A link 50 connects the link 47 and the guide 33. The needle-bar work feed movement is stopped by connecting the end 48 of the lever 47 to the pivot 44 and this movement lifts the guide 33 bringing the slots 34 into engagement with the pins 35. In a further modification the needle bar moves with the feed dog instead of being positively operated. The needle is vibrated laterally by a mainshaft cam-actuated linkage.
