This invention relates to a sewing machine for stitching tray purses, pouches and the like and liasfor an object to provide a construction which can be readily" operated attendant; other objects and advantages are hereinafter indicated or will be understood from the following description. t
In the sewing machine of the invention, the free end portion of the work-supportand the portion of the l throat plate in which the needle aperture is formed are inclined downwardly, so that the work resting on the inclined surface thus presented is obliquely disposed relatively to the path of the vertically movable needle;
For feeding and clamping the work there employed a duplex-feeding and clamping device which performs feeding movement-s while the needle is above the work and which also performs rising and falling movements in the interval between the mo ment of penetration of the work by the needle and the completion of the downstroke of the needle, the movements of said device being derived from cams on the needle-bar actuating shaft. 7 V
The said device includes a feeding foot adapted to hold the body or tray of the purse against the throat-plate, said foot being secured to the lower end of an inclined clamp arm or feed lever having at its upper end auniver sal oint connection with a sup- T portbeneath the overhanging arm of the machine. mounted at its opposite end to rock on the same horizontal axis as the feed lever. Near its lower end the secondary arm or lever is guided bet-ween lugs upstanding from the feed lever. The presser member or purse guide is normally spring-urged towards the feeding foot and controls the upper edge of the side strip. preventing it from rising as the needle ascends from the work, besides maintaining the work in position relatively to a needle guard.
The feeding movements are derived as aforesaid from a cam on the needle-bar actuating shaft through connections including rock shafts, one at each side of the bracket arm, one of said shafts having 2 arm connected by a link to a feed-driving lever mounted for lateral vibratory movement and vertical reciprocatory movement and having a ball-joint connection with the feed lever, so that vibratory movements of the feed-driving lever result'in feeding and return movements of the feeding foot and purse guide. The feed-driving lever is piw oted at its upper end to a cross-head secured to the upper end of a spring-pressed bar which takes the place of the usual presser bar, said cross-head being also secured to a vertically movable follower or plunger influenced by a lifting cam at the forward end of the needle-bar actuating shaft, whence the feeddriving lever derives up and down movements which are communicated to the feeding foot and thereby to the purse guide.
