Abstract

Polyurethanes useful as solid propellants are prepared by reacting nitrazo diisocyanates of the formula:- <F\1> wherein A and A1 are alkylene radicals and Z is a nitroalkylene radical, with a polyalcohol, e.g. 5,5-dinitro-1,2-hexanediol, in the presence of a ferric acetylacetonate catalyst.ALSO:The invention comprises nitraza diisocyanates of the formula:-<FORM:0933449/IV(a)/1> wherein A and A1 are alkylene radicals and Z is a nitroalkylene radical. The compounds are prepared by reacting a nitraza diacyl halide of the formula:- <FORM:0933449/IV(a)/2> (wherein X represents fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine) with an alkali or alkaline earth metal azide to form a nitraza diacyl azide of the formula:- <FORM:0933449/IV(a)/3> which is then heated under anhydrous conditions to effect rearrangement to the isocyanate. Nitraza diacyl halides of the above formula are prepared by treating the corresponding nitraza dicarboxylic acids with a thionyl halide. Nitraza dicarboxylic acids of the formula: <FORM:0933449/IV(a)/4> are prepared by hydrolysis of the corresponding nitraza dinitriles.
