Abstract

Nitro-amino diisocyanates of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkylene radical and x is 1, 2 or 3 are condensed in the presence of boron trifluoride with nitro-substituted polyalcohol such as 2,2,2-trinitroethanol to form polyurethanes useful as explosives and propellants.ALSO:The invention comprises nitro-amino diisocyanates of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkylene radical and #c is 1, 2 or 3. The compounds are prepared by hydrolysing a dialkyl ester of a nitro-substituted nitroazo alkanedioic acid of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/2> where R1 is an alkyl group, with concentrated hydrochloric acid to form the free acid of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/3> converting the latter to a diacid halide of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/4> (where X represents halogen, preferably chlorine) using PCl5 in the presence of POCl3, treating the latter compound with sodium azide to form a di-azide of the formula:- <FORM:0930469/IV(a)/5> and heating this compound to effect rearrangement to the diisocyanate. The latter compounds may be reacted with nitroalkanols, such as 2,2,2-trinitroethanols, to form urethanes.
