Abstract
<PICT:0933295/III/1> A heat transfer element for heating or cooling liquids or gases and especially for use in sulphuric acid concentrating apparatus comprises a metallic core provided with a thin-walled tantalum sheath secured to the core by an intermediate layer of solid metallic bonding medium to protect the core from corrosion by the liquid or gas. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a heavy-walled mild steel tube 17 has end caps 18 and 19 welded to it and a collar 30 for attaching the element to a wall of the vessel containing the liquid to be heated. Tubes 22 and 25 provide the inlet and outlet respectively for the heating medium, e.g. steam. The tantalum sheath surrounds and is brazed to the end cap 19 and to the tubular section of the core up to the collar 30. Apparatus for heating or cooling liquids may include a number of these elements projecting into the interior of the vessel containing the liquid.
