Abstract
1,170,584. Tubular heat exchange elements. MUREX Ltd. 31 May, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 19703/66. Heading F4S. A thin-walled tube 1 is reinforced by a perforated, coextensive split sleeve 2 sprung into contact with either the inner surface or the outer surface of the tube 1 said sleeve having only a single slit therein. In a bayonet or field-type heat exchange element as shown, for immersion in a fluid to be heated or cooled, a finned tube 3 extends within the tube 1 which has a closed end, the tube 3 providing additional reinforcement and also the flow or return passage for the fluid passing through the element. The perforations 5 in the split sleeve 2 serve to turbulate the fluid and to provide contact between the fluid and the wall of tube 1. The fins 4 on the tube 3 may be longitudinal as shown, helical or transverse and perforated. The tube 3 may be omitted in a simple unidirectional tube or it may comprise a finned bar. In another application of the invention the element may comprise a thermometer pocket to be introduced into a liquid or a gas the temperature of which is to be measured. The tube 1 may be made of tantalum, the sleeve 2 of stainless steel and the finned tube or bar 3 of carbon steel. The invention is said to be applicable to tubes of any cross-section.
