Abstract
933,202. Turning railway wheel treads. SCOTTISH MACHINE TOOL CORPORATION Ltd. March 21, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10420/61. Class 83 (3). A support for railway wheels, for use in trimming the treads, comprises rollers 8, 9, Fig. 3, carried at the ends of sliding members 11, 12, respectively. The other ends of these members bear on a rocking lever 6 with a spindle 7 which is mounted in the end of a lever 5. The other end of this lever is keyed to a shaft 4 rotated by an hydraulic piston and cylinder device to maintain the rollers in engagement with the wheel tread. The roller 8 is stepped abruptly at 18, Fig. 4, the amount of the usual " cut " to be taken to trim the wheel tread and thus the rollers support the wheel across the whole tread as the latter is cut. The wheels 10 may be machined while " in situ " in vehicle tracks 19, 20 being provided with a gap for the support rollers adjacent a lathe. The wheels are lifted by the rollers to engage the lathe centres and then supported during turning.
