Abstract

933,133. Stuffing-box substitutes. JOINT FRANCAIS. April 19, 1961 [June 7, 1960], No. 14102/61. Class 122 (5). A toric packing 1 is formed with nipples 3 located on each side of the median plane of the packing. The packing is mounted in a groove 6 in a casing 5 in which a shaft 2 rotates. Alternatively, the groove is formed in the shaft. An even number of the nipples, which may be of the same or different height, are equidistantly distributed alternatively on each end face of the packing so that in the groove the packing follows an undulating course whereby lubricant on the shaft is swept through the packing to ensure its lubrication. At each of different radial sections at the packing two nipples of different height may be arranged opposite each other, the tallest nipple being located alternately on each side of the packing from one radial section to the next. The nipples may be cylindrical and may be arranged perpendicularly or obliquely to the median plane of the packing and their end faces may be arched. The packing may have a circular, elliptical or oval crosssection and may be of rubber, elastomer or other plastic material and integrally moulded with the nipples.
