Abstract
1,208,081. Electrostatic generators. MOONSTAR RUBBER Ltd. and A. ISOYA. 4 Feb., 1969 [21 March, 1968; 2 Aug., 1968], No. 5963/69. Heading H2A. The charge carrier of a Van de Graaff type generator comprises a flexible cord of dielectric material surrounded by a cover of natural or synthetic rubber formed with spaced, annular ribs 2 carrying conductive rings 4 which are longer than the ribs so that oppositely-extending cavities 5 are formed in each ring. As shown in Fig. 1, polyester or rayon fibres 1 are embedded in the material 3 of the cover. Alternatively, Fig. 4, a bundle of fibres I<SP>1</SP>, or a knitted cord of fibres embedded in and coated with rubber, is surrounded by a series of rubber sleeves 3<SP>1</SP> formed with flanges 2<SP>1</SP>. The sleeves may be pushed into the rings 4 so as to engage the flanges 2<SP>1</SP> in annular grooves therein or the sleeves may be cast in the rings. Again, the rings may each be formed in two semi-cylindrical halves which are placed round a flange 2<SP>1</SP> and spot-welded along the joints. Fig. 6, shows a generator in which a charge-carrier 12 as above runs over a motor-driven pulley 13, a tensioning pulley 14, guide pulleys 16, 17 and earthed pulleys 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, all the pulleys having peripheral rubber rings thereon. Located opposite the pulleys 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are charge-inducing and removing electrodes 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, each in the form of a pulley with a deep groove 19, Fig. 8, which embraces but does not contact the charge carrier. These electrodes are rotated slowly against sponge-rubber cleaning pads 20. The generator casing b is filled with gas, such as Freon, under pressure and may house more than one charge-carrier.
