Abstract

Proteinaceous layers such as gelatin layers are hardened by incorporating therein a compound of the general formula:-R1-CH(Cl)-CO-N(R2)-Z-N(R2) -CO-CH(Cl)-R, wherein Z is a chemical bond, an alkylene radical of 1-6 carbon atoms or an unsubstituted or substituted arylene radical, and R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals, or both R2 groups together with both nitrogens and the group Z may complete a heterocyclic ring such as piperazine or pyrazolidine. Compounds are specified wherein R1 and R2 are H or CH3, and Z is a single bond, -CH2-, -(CH2)2-, -(CH2)4-, or m-carboxy-o-phenylene, or Z together with both R2 groups completes a piperazine ring. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a -chlorocarboxylic acid chlorides with the appropriate diamine or heterocyclic compound in aqueous alkaline solution. Examples are given of the preparation of such compounds by reacting chloracetyl chloride with hydrazine hydrate, dimethylhydrazine, tetramethylene diamine or 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid, and by reacting piperazine with 2-chloropropionic acid chloride.
