932,782. Soil consolidation apparatus. E. ROSENTHAL. March 1, 1962, No. 8037/62. Class 107. [Also in Group XXIV] Vibratory apparatus, particularly for consolidating soil comprises a base-plate 1, a driveshaft 2 mounted in bearings 3 and driven by, e.g., a V-belt pulley (not shown), at least one frame 6 journalled on the shaft 2 for limited angular movement in a plane parallel to the plate 1 and at least one auxiliary shaft 14 mounted on the frame parallel to the shaft 2 and rotatable therewith but in the opposite direction through meshing gears 16. Out-ofbalance weights 17, 18 fixed to the shafts are of such mass and so mounted that the forces generated by rotation of the weights counteract each other in a direction parallel to a line 15 joining the axes of the shafts 2 and 14 but add in a direction perpendicular to that line. The angular adjustment of the frame 6 is varied by engagement of a rotatable worm 11 with a worm-wheel 10 or by piston-and-cylinder means 13. With the line 15 parallel to the plate 1 rotation of the shaft 2 causes vibration of the apparatus only in the direction perpendicular to the plate 1. If both of two frames 6 are adjusted in the direction of the arrows 8 or 9, rotation of the shaft 2 gives rise primarily to forces acting in a direction perpendicular to the plate 1 but also to forces having a component parallel to the plate which tend to move the apparatus to the right or left, respectively, as shown. If the frames are angularly adjusted in opposite directions the apparatus is caused to rotate. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) which comprises two frames 6, one auxiliary shaft 14 with its associated weight 17 is omitted from each frame but at opposite sides of the apparatus and the weights 18 made equal to the weights 17.
