The conveying reach of an endless belt conveyer is supported on self-troughing idler rollers suspended between a pair of cables which extend longitudinally of the conveyer and which are supported from fixed overhead supports by flexible connections, such as chains, and the return reach is supported on roller assemblies suspended from the cables or the flexible connections. As shown, cables 13 are supported on structures 15 comprising spreader bars 37 suspended from the roof 28 by chains 33, and troughing idler roller assemblies 16 which are supported from the cables at points spaced from the structures 15, comprise rollers 46 mounted on pivotally connected axles the outer ends of the outermost axles being connected to the cables as described in Specification 872,166. The return run of the belt is supported by spreader units 25, spaced from the support structures 15 and from the idler roller assemblies as shown in Fig. 1, and each comprising uprights 53 suspended from the cables 13, Fig. 3, and separated by a cross member 54 on which is mounted a return idler roller 62. The uprights 53 may be provided with adjustable legs 56 so that with light loads the spreader units 25 are suspended from the cables 13 but with heavy loads the units are supported on the ground. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the idler rollers for the return run of the belt are carried by the support structures 15, in which case the spreader bars 37 may only be provided at positions along the cables other than those at which a support structure is provided. In a further modification, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), a troughing idler roller assembly is provided at each point at which the cables 13 are suspended from the roof by the chains 33.
