A manipulator which may be as disclosed in Specification 931,444, and which comprises a cross-part 10 extending over a radio-activity screening wall 3 and having a depending arm 12 carrying jaws 14 and a further arm 13 having handles 15 for operating the jaws, is supported on the top of the wall by a mounting including a carriage 1 slidable along guides 2. The cross-part 10 is slidably and rotatably supported in a carrier 9 having arms 16 pivotally mounted about an axis 17 on an intermediate member 5, the member 5 having legs 6 rigid therewith whereby it is movably connected with the carriage 1 by parallel links 7 pivoted to the carriage at 8. The jaws 14 are moved to an approximate position near to the article to be gripped by sliding the carriage along the guides 2 and sliding the part 10 within the carrier 9. Precise movement of the jaws in a direction towards or away from the wall is then performed by manipulating the arm 13 to pivot the links 7, up and down movement is performed by movement of the arms 16 about the axis 17 and rotational movement is performed by rotating the part 10 within the carrier 9. The manipulator may be counterbalanced about the axis 17 by weight or spring means. In a modification (not shown) the manipulator is releasably attached to the carrier.
