Abstract

931,365. Manures. HEAD, WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 16, 1961], No. 5819/61. Class 111. Manures are obtained from municipal refuse and/ or sewage sludge or filter cake by subjecting the material to a mixing and shredding operation, passing the material through a slowly rotating horizontally disposed drum, directing on to and/or into the material during its passage through the drum a series of axially directed jets of air, and finally discharging the material through a rotating discharge chamber. Material is fed by a hopper 30, Fig. 1(a), into a chamber 28 where it is mixed and shredded by vanes 31 having attached thereto blades 32. The material passes into a drum 20, Figs. 1(a) and 1(b), rotating on rollers 22, the vanes 31 being fixed to the inner surface of drum 20 and rotating therewith. Air is supplied through holes in pipes 55 fixed diametrically across the drum 20 and fed by an air duct 34. The material passes through a small opening in an end wall 62 into a discharge chamber 60, and then through holes 61. In modifications the air is supplied through holes in pipes 73, Fig. 9, in the form of ring or spirals, through pipes 84, Fig. 12 (left-hand side), or nozzles 88 and 89, Fig. 12 (right-hand side) attached to annular pipes 86 arranged externally of drum 20.
