[Also in Group XXX] Books &c. to be trimmed are fed automatically or by hand into an inclined supply shoot 1 having a stop 2 which is slightly inclined to the vertical and the books &c. are fed by a member o to a channel 3 having pivotable bottom flaps 5, 6, 7, the channel and flaps being vertically adjustable relative to longitudinal trimming knives 4, 4a according to the length of the book to be trimmed and after the longitudinal trimming operation, the flaps are deflected out of the feed path and the book drops into a channel 3a from which it is fed by a member u to a flap channel member 3b where it is trimmed laterally by means of upper and lower fixed knives 25, 29 and upper and lower knives 26, 30 adjustable according to the width of the book to be trimmed and after the lateral trimming operation, the channel member 3b is pivoted downwardly and the finally trimmed book drops on to slide paths 36, 37 along which it is fed by members 38 to 41 to a removal belt 42 or stacking device. The shoot 1, channel 3 and flaps 5 to 7 are adjustable together by means of a hand wheel 8. The flaps 5 to 7 are deflected into and out of the feed path by means of cam discs 16 to 18 on main shaft 15. The member 3b is pivoted downwardly by means of disc 45, Fig. 5 on shaft 15, the disc being associated with roller 46, levers 47 and rod 49. Books fed by member o are moved into the vertical position prior to the longitudinal trimming operation by means of lateral flaps 12 to 14 adjustable vertically by means of a hand wheel 9. The knife 26 is adjustable by means of a hand wheel 28 and the counter knife 30, shavings hopper 31 and guide rail 32 are adjustable together by means of a hand wheel 27. The knife 30 is protected relatively to the knife 26 during adjustment so that the machine cannot be switched on while the knives are located one above the other. The book is protected by a deflectable sheet 43, Fig. 2, while being fed to the knife 29. The knife 4 is driven from shaft 15 by way of shaft 21, transverse shaft 22, eccentric 22a and push-rod 22b. The knives 25, 26 are driven from shaft 15 by means of shaft 21, eccentric 23 and pushrod 24. The members 38 to 41, Fig. 5, are carried by chains driven from the shaft 15.
