To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bo0k-Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in book trimming machines.
In book trimming machines heretofore employed it has been customary to utilize clamps of one kind or another, usually manually operated, for clamping together a plurality of leaves and to trimthe leaves so clamped while they are stationarily held.
One of the objects of the present inven tion is the production of a book trimming machine in which a plurality or packet of leaves is automatically clamped and forwarded, the trimming operation takingplace while the leaves are moving forward, whereby a greater output is attained than has heretofore been possible, and whereby the cost of trimming is materially reduced.
A further object of the invention is the production of a device of the general character above indicated in which packets of leaves are automatically fed to the clamping and forwarding means, and are automatically received from the clamping and forwarding means,and transported awaytherefrom.
Still another object is the production of a de ice of the character above described in which an initial clamping and forwarding means is employed in which one or more edges of a packet of leaves is trimmed, and which delivers the packets to a second cl mping and forwarding means in which other edges of the packets are trimmed.
A nether object of the invention is the production of a device which eliminates the necessity for the use of the well known cutting stick, which will trim any size book without the necessit for the use of any eX- terior devices, which eliminates the possibility of iniury to the machine operator, and which eliminates the necessity for stopping the machine to grind the trimming knives and thereb lower the productive eificiency of the machine.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 1s a plan view of a portion of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, illustrating a delivery mechanism for the trimmed leaves, which is not shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. t is a sectional elevation illustrating in detail certain parts of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, and is taken on the line 1% in Fig. 3; Fig. 5' is a detail view of a modification of the device shown in Figs. 1 to a inclusive and illustrating a different form of trimming knife; Fig. 6 is a plan detail view, upon an enlarged scale, of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a detail plan View of a modified form of trimming knife; and Fig. 8 is a detail sectional elevation of the device shown in Fig. 7, and taken on the line 88 in that gure.
In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves. In the best constructions there is further provided means for relatively adjusting the clamp ng means and the trim- Ining means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed. In the best constructions also there is provided an initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, means in the pa h of movement of leaves so held for trimming one or more edges 'of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and f r forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clam ing means delivers leaves, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming an ther edge of the leaves; and the i itial and second clamping means are operati e in different planes. In the best c nstructions also the clamping means consists of a continuously rotating turret and an endless belt cooperating with a portion of the periphery of the turret to clamp a plurality or packet of leaves between the periphery of the turret and the belt and to forward the same in this position, the belt being automatically held tau? bv means of a yielding spring pressed device which is adjustable. All of the above means may be varied in construction within wide limits.
The device selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same, and the invention therefore is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described. Furthermore, certain parts of the invention are capable of use inclependent of other parts. and such independent use is contemplated.
In the device selected to illustrate the in vention, 1 indicates a bed mounted upon suitable legs 2. Rising from the bed 1 is a frame This frame supports a shaft 1, which shaft carries a pulley 5, and over-running this pulley 5 is a plurality of belts 6, the upper runs of which pass over rollers 7 It will of course be understood that the belts (3 run over another pulley not shown but located to the right of Fig. 1; and it will be further understood that a single wide belt may be utilized in place of a plurality of narrow belts, if desired. The belts 6 constitute means for feeding a plurality of superposed leaves or packets of leaves, indicated diagrammatically at 8, to automatically operative clamping means, which clamping means serves also to forward the packets to a position where they are trimmed.
The machine selected to illustrate the invention includes an initial leaf clamping and forwarding means to which the feeding means delivers leaves, and further includes a second clamping and forwarding means to which the initial clamping and forwarding means delivers leaves which have had one or more edges trimmed. The initial clamping and forwarding means is located adjacent the delivery end of the feed belt 6, and the space between the feed belt and the initial clamping means is bridged by a guide 9 bolted or otherwise secured to the frame 3 before referred to. The initial clamping means consists partly in two turrets 10 and 11, spaced apart and both mounted upon a shaft 12 which is journaled in the frame 3 and in a bracket 13 rising from the bed 1. The turret 10 is fast upon the shaft 12, while the turret 11 is splined upon said shaft. The object of this construction is to permit of a movement of the turret 11 toward or away from the fixed turret 10 in accordance with the width of the leaves to be trimmed. The mechanism for effecting this movement will be hereinafter described. The shaft 12 carries a gear 14: which is in mesh with an idle gear 15 mounted upon a suitable stud secured to the frame 3. The gear 15 is in mesh with a gear 16 which is also loosely mounted upon a stud secured to the frame 3. The gear 16 is in mesh with a pinion 17, which pinion is fast upon a shaft 18 journaled in the frame 3 and bracket 13. The shaft 18 carries a bevel gear 19 which is in mesh with a bevel gear 20 fast upon an inclined shaft 21, the upper end of which is supported by a bracket 22 and the lower end of which is journaled in the bed 1 before referred to, and projects below said bed. Upon the lower end of the shaft 21 is fixed a worm wheel. 23 operated by a worm 24 fast upon a shaft 25 which carries a pulley 26, and is the main driving shaft of the machine.
Cooperating with a portion of the periphery of the turret 11 is an endless belt 27, and cooperating with the turret 10 is an endless belt 28. These two belts run over idle pulleys 29 and 30 respectively mounted upon studs 31 and 32, which are fast in the frame 3 before referred to. The belts 27 and 28 also run over a pulley 33 which is loosely mounted upon a stud 3 1-, this stud being carried in an arm 35 slidably mounted in suitable ways formed by gibs 86, which gibs are fast to the frame 3 before referred to. The arm 35 has outstanding lugs 37, and the gibs 36 have similar outstanding lugs 38. Helical springs 39 are interposed between each pair of lugs 37 and 38, the function of these springs being to keep the belts 28 and 27 taut and to cause said belts to yield when a packet of leaves is introduced between the belts and the turrets, and to hold the packets firmly in position as they are forwarded through the curved path corresponding to the periphery of the turrets. Adjusting screws T0 are provided for regulating the tension of the springs 39,
these adjusting screws being threaded in the lugs 38 before referred to.
By an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be readily understood that packets of leaves placed upon the feed belts (3 will be delivered by said belts to the guide 9 and from the guide to the turrets 10 and 11; and that as they move forward on the periphery of the turrets, they will be clamped and held by the belts 27 and 28 until they reach a position adjacent the pulley 30, the packets themselves driving the belt or carrying the belt along with them as they pass over on the periphery of the turrets 10 and 11.
In the machine selected to illustrate the invention, means are provided for simultaneously trimming opposite edges of packets clamped and forwarded by the turrets and belts above described. This means consists of two circular knives 11 and 42, the cutting edges of which operate inthe path of movement of packets clamped and forwarded by the initial clamping means. The knife 41 is held between flanges 43 and 44, the flange 4.3 being fast upon the shaft 18 before referred to, and the flange 44 being threaded upon the said shaft and held in position thereon by means of a lock nut 45 of well known construction. The knife 42 is held between flanges 46 and 47, both of which are splined to the shaft 18 before referred to, so that the knife may be moved toward or away from the knife 41. It may be here remarked that the turrets 10 and 11 and the knives 41 and are of large diameter, approximately 4 feet, although these dimensions may be materially reduced where small books only are to be trimmed.
The stud 31 before referred to carries a gear 48 which is in mesh with a pinion 49 mounted on a stud 50 secured in the frame 3 before referred to.. The pinion 49 is in mesh with a gear 51 which is fast upon the shaft 4 before referred to, and which drives the feed belts 6.
The machine selected to illustrate the in vention is provided with means for varying the distance between the clamping means and also the distance between the trimming knives which cooperate with those clamping means, so that books or packets of leaves of varying width may be trimmed in the same machine. The mechanism for accomplishing this result includes a spool 52 which is fast upon the hub of the turret 11 before referred to, and further includes a similar spool 53 which is fast upon the hub of the flange 47 before referred to. A fork 54 engages the spool 52 and a fork 55 engages the spool 53, these forks being carried respectively by adjusting screws 56 and 57, which screws are journaled in the bracket 13 before referred to. The screw 56 carries a sprocket 58, and the screw 57 carries a sprocket 59. Over-running these sprockets is a chain 60, the function of which is to synchronize the movement of the forks 54 and 55, and consequently the movement of the turret 11 and the knife 42. The screw 56 projects beyond the chain 60 and upon its projecting end is pinned or otherwise fastened a handwheel 61, by means of which the screw 56 may be directly operated and the screw 57 indirectly operated through the agency of the chain 60. It will of course be understood that when an adjustment is made of one turret toward the other and one knife toward the other, the
belt over-running the turret 11 and running in contact with the side of the knife 42 will be shifted to the proper position for the new adjustment, the pulleys over which the belts run being of such character that this belt shifting may be readily effected.
It will be readily understood that as a packet of leaves is forwarded between the periphery of the turrets 10 and 11 and the belts 27 and 28, its edges projecting beyond said turrets and belts will be trimmed off by the rotating knives 41 and 42. After the trimmed packet passes the knives 41 and 42 and approaches the pulley 30, it will be released and will slide down a guide 62 which is supported by a bracket 63 rising from the bed 1 before referred to. If a third edge of the book or packet is to be trimmed, as in the machine selected to illustrate the invention, the guide 62 operates to slightly turn the packet and deliver it to a turret 64 operating in a different plane from the turrets 10 and 11 before described, so that the edge of the book or packet which lay to the rear in the initial clamping and forwarding means will lie on top in the second clamping and forward means which includes the turret 64. The turret 64 is mounted upon a vertical shaft 65 journaled in a suitable bearing in the bed 1 and projecting below said bed. Upon its projecting end is mounted a worm wheel 66 which is in mesh with a worm 67 fast upon the shaft 25 which, as hereinbefore stated, is the main power shaft of the machine. Cooperating with the turret 64, as clamping and forward ing means, is a single belt 68 over-running idle pulleys 69, 70 and 71 which are respectively loosely mounted upon studs 7 73 and 74. these studs being secured in the bed 1 of the machine. The belt 68 also runs over a pulley 75 loosely mounted upon a stud 76, which stud is fast upon av movable frame having projecting lugs 77, this frame being mounted to slide between gibs having lugs 78--78, and a helical spring 79 is interposed between each pair of lugs 77 and 78, the function of the springs being to keep the belt 68 yieldingly taut. Adjusting screws 80 are threaded into the lugs 78 and are simultaneously operated by means of a handwheel S1 and a chain 82 over-running sprockets on each screw 80.
The belt 68 is driven by packets of leaves interposed between it and the turret 64. The turret 64 is provided with a flange 83,
upon which a packet rests as it is forwarded by the second clamping means. Means are provided for adjusting this flange 83 toward or away from the top of the turret, the purpose of this adjustment being to accommodate packets of different width. The adjustment is effected as follows: Journaled in the turret 64 are three shafts 84, the lower ends of which are threaded into suitable bosses formed on a spider integral with the flonge 83, the webs of the spider projecting through suitable apertures 85 in the wall of the turret 64. Each shaft 84 carries at its upper end an adjustable pinion 86 which is in mesh with a master gear 87 operated by means of a handwheel 88, and held in adjusted position by means of a locking handwheel 89.
Asa packet resting upon. the flange 83 and yea clamped between the periphery of the turret 61 and belt 68, is forwarded, it is trimmed by means of a rotating circular knife which knife is clamped between flanges 91 and 92. The flange 92 is fast upon a shaft 93 journaled in a boss 9 1 formed in a frame 95, which frame is slidably mounted upon the bed 1 between two pairs of gibs 96, these gibs being bolted to the bed of the machine. One side of the frame 95 is provided with a rack 97 which is in mesh with a pinion 98, this pinion being fast upon a short shaft journaled in the bed 1 of the machine, and which carries at its lower end a worm wheel 99. This worm wheel is in mesh with a worm 100 fixed upon a worm shaft 101 projecting outwardly beyond the main frame of the machine and which may be operated to move the knife as a whole toward the turret 64c, as the knife wears away. The lower end of the shaft 93 carries an idle gear 102 which is in mesh with an idle gear 103 carried upon an arm 10 1 which is journaled about the lower end of the shaft 93. The gear 103 is in mesh with another gear 105, which in turn is in mesh with a gear 106, the gear 106 being fast on the extreme lower end of the shaft 65 before referred to. The gears 103 and are spaced apart by means of a connecting link 107, so that the intermeshing of the train of gears by means of which the knife 90 is driven, is not disturbed by theadjustment of the knife toward or away from the turret 6 1.
In the device selected to illustrate the invention, a grinding device is employed for keeping sharp the edge of the knife 90. This grinding device is of a well known character and consists of an emery or other grinding wheel 108, driven by means of a belt 109 from a pulley 110 fast upon the upper end of the shaft 93 before referred to. It is of course obvious that a similar grinding device may be used in connection with the knives 11 and 12, should this be desired.
It will be understood that after a packet of leaves has passed the knife 90, three of its edges will have been trimmed and the packet is ready for delivery from the second clamping means and for transportation away therefrom. In the device selected to illustrate the invention, automatic mechanism is provided for this purpose. This mechanism consists of a series of belts 111 running over suitable pulleys 112 and 113 and located adjacent the turret 64-. These belts 111 are driven by means of a gear 114 which is in mesh with another gear 115, the gear 115 being driven by a spiral gear 116 suitably mounted upon a stud 117 secured in a bracket 118. The gear 116 is in mesh with a gear 119 suitably mounted upon a stud 120 carried in an arm 121 pivoted on the stud 117. -The stud 120 also carries a friction wheel 122 adapted to contact with and be driven by the pulley 75, the friction wheel 122 being held to its duty by means of a suitable spring 123.
An auxiliary belt forwarding mechanism is interposed between the turret 61 and the pulley 75 to control the movement of the packets after they are unclamped by the separation of the turret periphery and the belt 68 and before they are deposited upon the transporting belts 111. This auxiliary mechanism includes a belt 124 over-running small pulleys 125, 126 and 127. Belt tightening pulleys 128 are carried on the ends of spring controlled yielding levers 129, the construction of which is clearly shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 3, a packet forwarded by the turret 61 is caught by the belt 12-1 before it is fully released by the belt 68 and is thereafter forwarded by the belt 124 to a bent turning arm 130, the function of which is to turn the packet from the vertical position in which it is forwarded by the second clamping means to a horizontal position upon the belts 111, in which position it is transported away from the second clamping means.
The machine selected to illustrate the in vention is provided with means for supporting the knife 90 at points near its periphery, although this means is not essential to the operation of the machine. The means referred to consists of a plurality of rollers 131, two of which are located adjacent the turret 6-1, and the other one upon the opposite side of the knife. hese rollers 131 are journaled upon studs carried in frames 132 which are adjusted in the frame 95 before referred to, by means of adjusting screws 133.
The machine selected to illustrate the invention is further provided with a chute 13-1, the function of which is to conduct the waste material cut from the edges of the leaves away from the turret 6 1.
In the modified form of device shown in Figs. and 6, endless band knives are.
employed, these knives overrunning pulleys 1&1 and 1 12, the pulleys 141 being loosely mounted upon studs 1 13 suitably supported in the bracket 14 1 formed upon the frame 3. The lower pulley 1&2 of each band knife is fast upon a shaft 145 suitably'journaled in bearings formed in the bed 1 and carrying a worm wheel 1 16 meshing with a worm 1 17, which worm is fast upon the shaft 25 before referred to. At the point where the cutting actually takes place, the band knife is guided in spools 1 18 which are carried upon suitable arms 14:9 projecting from the main frame of the machine.
In the modified structure shown in Figs. 7 and 8 there is employed a knife cooperating with the turret 64 and belt 68. This knife 160 is bolted to a bar 161 provided at one end with an eccentric strap 162, which 1,1vag14e strap surrounds aneccentric 163 fast upon a vertical shaft 164, the shaft 164: being suitably journaled in the bed 1 of the machine. The shaft 164 carries a gear 165 which is in mesh with an idle gear 166 mounted upon a suitable stud 167 secured to the bed of the machine; and the gear 166 is in mesh with and is driven by a gear 168, the gear 168 be ing fast upon the shaft 65. The opposite end of the bar 161 is guided between rollers 169, each of which is loosely mounted upon a stud 170 secured to the bend of'the machine. The knife 160 is adjustable upon the bar 161, as clearly shown in Fig. 7, and well understood by mechanics in general. The bar and knife are held down to their duty by guides 171 formed in brackets 172 rising from the bed 1 of the machine. It Will be readily understood that the cut produced by the knife just described is a drawing out against the movement of the packets as they are forwarded by the turret at and belt 68.
In view of the foregoing, a detailed description of the operation of the device is deemed unnecessary and is therefore omitted in the interest of brevity.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuouslytraveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves. i

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of separated simultaneously acting means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming opposite edges of the leaves.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initialclamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge. of the leaves.
5. "In a book trimmingmachine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurallty of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, said initial clamping means and second clamping means being operated in different planes.
6. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves in packet form, of means in the path'of movement of a packet of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming an edge of the packet.

I11 a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously travelingmeans for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves,.of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the clamping means.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuouslytraveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves through a curved path, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the clamping means.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of separated simultaneously acting means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming opposite edges of the leaves, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the clamping means.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path ofmovement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leavesto which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of .movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming an other edgeof the leaves, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the initial clamping means.
11, In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, said initial clamping means and second clamping means being operated in different planes, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the initial clamping means.
12. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves in packet form, of means in the path of movement of a packet of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming an edge of the packet, and automatically operated means for delivering leaves to the clamping means.
13. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
14. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves through a curved path, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
15. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of separated simultaneously'acting means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamp ing means for trimming opposite edges of the leaves, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
16. In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaveshelcl and for *arded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
17. In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, said initial clamping means and the second clamping means being operated in difierent planes, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
18. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves in packet form, of means in the path of movement of a packet of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming an edge of the packet, and means for receiving trimmed leaves and transporting them away from the clamping means.
19. In a book trimming machine, the com bination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.
20. I11 a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves through a curved path, of
means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of separated simultaneously acting means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming opposite edgesof the leaves, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.
23. In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves to which the initial clamping means delivers leaves, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, said initial clamping means and second clamping means being operated in different planes, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves in packet form, of means in the path of movement of a packet. of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming an edge of the packet, and means for relatively adjusting the clamping means and the trimming means whereby leaves of different sizes may be trimmed.
25. In a book trimming machine, the combination with a continuously rotating turret, of an endless belt over-running aportion of the periphery of said turret and adapted to cooperate with said turret to clamp together and to forward a plurality of leaves, and means adjacent one edge of said turret and said belt and located in the path of movement of leaves held and for warded by said turret and belt for trimming the edges of the leaves.
26. In a book trimming machine, the combination with a continuously rotating turret, of an endless belt over-running a portion of the periphery of said turret and adapted to cooperate with said turret to clamp together and to forward a plurality of leaves, means adjacent one edge of said turret and said belt and located in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by said turret and belt for trimming the edges of the leaves, and yielding means for keeping said belt taut.
27. In a book trimming machine, the combination with a continuously rotating turret, of an endless belt over-running a portion of the periphery of said turret and adapted to cooperate with said turret to clamp together and to forward a plurality of leaves, means adjacent one edge of said turret and said belt and located in the path of move ment of leaves held and forwarded by said turret and belt for trimming the edges of the leaves, and spring actuated means for keeping said belt taut.
28. In a book trimming machine, the combination with a continuously rotating turret,
, of an endless belt over-running a portion of the periphery of said turret and adapted to cooperate with said turret to clamp together and to forward a plurality of leaves, means adjacent one edge of said turret and said belt and located in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by said turret and belt for trimming the edges of the leaves, and adjustable yielding means for keeping said belt taut.
29. Ina book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of a knife in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of a knife having a continuously moving cutting edge in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves.
31; In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of a continuously rotatingcircular knife in the path of move inent-of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and a leaf guide for controlling the position o-fleaves during the trimming operation.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, a leaf guide for controlling the position of leaves during the trimming operation, and means for adjusting said guide whereby different sizes of leaves may be trimmed.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of automatically operated means for feeding leaves to the clamping means, a leaf guide for properly locating the leaves in the clamping means as they are delivered thereto by the feeding means, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of a plu 'ality of belts automatically operative to feed leaves to the clamping means, and means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves.
36. In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and a plurality of belts operative to receive trimmed leaves and to transport said leaves away from the clamping means.
37. In a book trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of a plurality of belts automatically operative to feed leaves to the initial clamping means, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the initial clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for receiving leaves from the initial clamping means and for clamping said leaves together and forwarding them, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming an other edge of the leaves, and a plurality of beltsfor receiving and transporting leaves away from said second clamping means.

In a book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and means for conducting that portion of the leaves out off by the trimn'iing means away from the clamping means. i

In book trimming machine, the combination with continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming the edges of the leaves, and a chute for conducting that portion of the leaves out off by the trimming means away from the clamping means.

In a hook trimming machine, the combination with initial continuously traveling means for clamping together and for forwarding a plurality of leaves, of means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the clamping means for trimming one edge of the leaves, a second continuously traveling means for receiving trimmed leaves from the initial clamping means and for clamping said leaves together and forwarding them, means in the path of movement of leaves held and forwarded by the second clamping means for trimming another edge of the leaves, and a common drive mechanism for all of said means.
