Referring more in detail to the drawings:
I designates a machine embodying the features of the present invention and which includes a table 2 having a dat substantially rectangular shaped top plate 3 supported at its ends on pairs of vertical l'egs 5 and 6, 1, the table top being braced to the legs by suitable ties 8 and 9 to form a substantially rigid structure.
6o Supported at one end of the table is a feeding shelf IB that is supported in the plane of the table tcp by braces II connecting the outer end of the shelf with the legs 4 and 5.
The shelf preferably includes a horizontal series of slats I2 extending in the longitudinal 5 direction of the table and adapted to be interarranged relatively to each other whereby a guide strip I3 on one of the slats is adapted to be positioned relatively to a feeding head that is carried by the table 3 later described. Carried 10 at the sides of the shelf are work supporting wings I4 and i5 adapted to support stacks of sheet material which are to be fed through the machine.
The feeding head is designated I6 and includes 15` upper and lower conveyor belts il and I8. The lower conveyor belt I8 has its upper run I9 operating in a longitudinal slot 2D extending the length of the table top 2 and supported with its upper face in the plane of the table on a series 20- of rollers 2|, the rollers 2l being mounted on pins 22 having their ends supported in longitudinal flanges 23 and 24 depending from the side edges of the slot, as best shown in rg. 4. The lower run 25 of the upper belt Il is retained in sub- 25 stantial contact with the upper run of the lower belt by a series of rollers 25 carried by the spaced longitudinal bars 21 and 28 that are suspended over the table by means of goose neck brackets 29 and 30. The rollers 26 are rotatably mounted 30 on shafts 3| having their ends mounted in slots 32 of the longitudinal bars 2l and 28 and are yieldingly urged against the belts by spring pressed plungers 33 and 34 slidably mounted in bores 35 and 35 in the bars and having ends 35 engaging in sockets 3l in the ends of the shafts.
The springs 38 are loosely supported in the bars and have one end engaging the tops of the plungers and their opposite ends engaging plugs 39 threaded in the open upper ends of the bores 40 35 and 36.
The bars are connected near their ends by U- shaped brackets 49 in which are rotatably mounted vertically positioned screw threaded shafts 4| that are threadedly supported in the horizontal 45 arms 42 of the brackets 29 and 3G, the other arms of the brackets being secured to the side of the table by suitable fastening devices. Pressure of the rollers against the belts is regulated to compensate for Various thicknesses of sheets passed 50 through the machine by rotating the shafts 4I to raise and lower the side bars, the shafts 4I being operated by hand wheels 43.
Carried by a bar 44 between the brackets 29 and the adjacent ends of the longitudinal bars is 55 a glue pot 45 having a glue applying wheel 46 arranged so that its periphery moves through a slot 4l in the bottom of the glue pot for carrying the glue into contact with the work sheet fed through the machine, as later described. 'Ihe 60 glue applying wheel is xed to a shaft 48having its ends rotatably mounted in ydepending lugs 49 on the glue pot and in a bearing 50 on a bracket 5| carrying the bar 44.
The outer end of the shaft carries a pulley 52 which is driven by a belt 53 from a pulley 54 that is fixed to a shaft 55 at the opposite end of the machine as best illustrated in Fig. 1.
Carried by the side bar 28 and positioned thereon so as to operate on the paper subsequent to the glue pot is a forming shoe 56 comprising an angle member having a vertical leg 51 attached to the side face of the side bar 28 and having a horizontal ange 58 extending outwardly therefrom to form a longitudinal pressing foot for holding the work in position on the table, as later described, the vertical flange of the angle member being secured to the side bar by headed screws 50 extending through key hole slots 60 whereby the shoe may be readily removed from the machine by lifting the shoe until the enlarged portion 6| of the key hole slots will rise over the heads of the fastening devices.
The forward end of the shoe is curved upwardly as at v62 to permit free entrance of the work 'pieces thereunder as they are moved into folding relation with the folding shoe 63 that is positioned slightly in advance of the forming shoe to effect folding of the work pieces as they are moved through the machine.
The vfolding shoe 63 includes a flat longitudinal plate 64 having transverse slots 65 for adjustably mounting the plate relatively to the forming shoe. The shoe is secured to the flat top of the plate portion 3 by headed fastening devices 66 having Shanks extendable through the slots 65 therein to clamp the plates against the table.
Formed along the edge of the folding shoe ad- Yjacent the forming shoe is an upwardly off-set and laterally extending folding flange 61 having its forward end lying in the plane of the plate portion of the shoe member 56.
The rear end of the folding flange tapers outwardly and upwardly therefrom to form a gradually rising substantially vertical folding portion 10 supporting a horizontal triangular shaped pressing portion 1| adapted to overlie the upper face of the horizontal ange of the forming Vshoe 56.
The forward end of the folding shoe has a downwardly curved nger 12 positioned in an opening 13 in the table top so that as the work pieces vare fed along between the belts, the forward iedges thereof will ride up the downturned finger lso that the edge thereof rides onto the upper face of the folding shoe. As the work Apieces are advanced along the shoe, the folding ange gradually turns the edge thereof retractively over the upper face of a work piece or the Vhorizontal flange of the forming shoe depending upon 'the particular type of work being run through the machine.
When the type of work requires the folding of the work pieces o-ver a card and the folded edge yof the work piece to be drawn tightly against the card, the side bar is provided with a rotary wiping disk 14 having its axis positioned at an inclined angle whereby the crowned lower face v15 of the disk engages the turned portion of the work at a single point on its periphery so that lwhen the disk is rotated, the turned portion of the work will be drawn tightly over the card to rwhich it is being attached.
'I'he Vshaft -of the drawing disk is rotatably mountedin a bearing 16 extending laterally from the side of the longitudinal bar 28 and carries a pulley 11 at its upper end that is retained by a wing nut 18 threaded on a projecting end of the shaft and engaging a hub of the pulley 11.
The pulley 11 is rotated from a pulley 18 fixed in driving relation with the pulley 5e through an endless belt running over the respective pulleys and over horizontally positioned pulleys carried on a bracket 8| that is fixed to the side of the table, as shown in Fig. 1.
Also secured on the longitudinal side bar 28 is a series of wipers 82, each comprising a flat spring 83 having one end engaging against the top of the table in the path of the work piece and having its other end xed to an eccentrically mounted hub 84 that is retained in adjusted position on studs 85 projecting laterally from the outer face of the side bar. The hubs thus form cam like elements for variably tensioning the pressing end portions of the wipers to suit the particular work passed through the machine, the eccentric hub being retained in position by set screws 85 threaded therein and engaging against the studs 05.
Pivotally mounted on the longitudinal side bar 28 intermediate the length o-f the forming shoe are pressing members 81 and 88 having forwardly extending end `portions 89 and 90 adapted to engage against the upper face of the work pieces between the folding and forming shoes, as sho-wn in Fig. 3.
The shaft carrying the pulleys 54 and 19 is rotatably mounted in a bearing bracket 9| and also forms the driving connection with the endmost pulley 92 of the upper conveyor belt, as shown in Fig. 1.
The lower conveyor belt is driven by a shaft 93 that is. actuated in timed relation with the shaft 55 through gearing 94 in the housing 95, the gearing in turn being driven from a pulley 96 that is connected through a driving belt 91 with the driving pulley 98 of a motor 99, as shown in Fig. 1.
Positioned at the delivery end of the table is a series of off-take belts |00 mounted on rollers 0| and |02 carried by a table extension |03 that has its outer end supported on legs |04 and |05.
Assuming that a machine constructed andassembled as described is employed for securing the folded over edge of a sheet to the edge of a card board sheet, the operation is as follows:
A stack of the paper sheets is placed upon the work supporting wing I5 and a stack of card boards on the opposite wing or on the unused portion of the shelf. The guide is then adjusted so that it engages one side edge of the card board sheets while the other side moves in alignment with the glue applying wheel and a projecting edge of one of Athe papersheets moves in folding relation with the folding shoes. The upperbelt'is then adjusted relatively to the lower belt to compensate for the thickness of the work by manipulating the hand wheels 53 to raise or lower the belt, as best suited 'to the particular work at hand.
The machine is then started, after which one of the paper sheets A is placed upon the slatted feeding table with a side edge thereof in guiding relation with the guide rail.
One of the card boards B is then placed over the sheet so that one edge thereof also engages the guiderrail and leaves an'exposed portion of the sheet along its opposite edge which is adapted to be `folded over the edge ofthe 'card board, as the superimposed card and sheet are adsheets to edges of superimposed card board sheets vanced through the machine.
As the card board passes under the glue applying wheel, a strip of glue will be applied thereto and when the projecting edge C of the sheet A rides over the downturned nger on the folded shoe, the edge of the sheet will be lifted thereby onto the plate portion of the shoe. As the work members continue their advance along the table under propelling inuence of the belts, the edge C of the sheet will move under the folding flange so that it is bent thereby retractively over the glued portion of the card board. While the projecting portion of the sheet is being turned over the card board, the card board is retained flat against the table by the depending ends of the pressing members 8l and 88.
After the fold has been formed and the forward ends of the card board and paper sheets emerge from under the shoes, the bent over portion of the sheet is engaged by the rotary disk 14 which draws the folded over portion of the sheet in the direction of the belts so that it is drawn tightly over the edge of the card board. As the work pieces continue their advance, the turned over portion of the sheet will move under the wiping arms 83 which press it into sealing engagement with the glue. The belts continue the advance of the work pieces to move them on the off-take and delivery conveyor I 60 at the rear end of the machine.
If it is desired to simply turn back the edge of a sheet of paper, the glue pot may be moved laterally away from the path of travel of the sheet so that the exposed edge thereof is free to ride under the horizontal flange of the forming shoe which retains it in flat condition. In this instance, the projecting edge rides the folding shoe and is turned thereby over the forming shoe as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11.- As the sheet emerges from under the shoes, it is engaged by the disk to press the fold in tight contact with the body portion of the sheet; however, it may be desirable to lift the disk from contact with the sheet so that the pressing is accomplished solely through the wiper members.
When it is desired to produce double folds in a card board, the side bar 28 is equipped with two sets of folding and forming shoes arranged relatively to each other so that the folds are made in the proper place in the sheets as they are set across the table.
To assist in making the folds, the table may be equipped at its forward end with pairs of scoring disks iil, it?, and IEB, |09 that are fixed on a horizontal shaft rotatably mounted in bearings IID and I Il at the sides of the table and which is driven by a chain and sprocket connection i l2 with a suitable driving shaft on the machine such as the shaft for driving the lower conveyor belt.
In order to guide the ends of the work pieces under the scoring rollers, the scoring rollers are provided with a shield H3 having its ends secured to the bearings mounting the score roller shaft as shown in Fig. 12.
In case it is desired to make folds on both edges of the sheet, the table top may be equipped with a second set of folding and forming shoes supported by the other longitudinal bar 21 as shown in Fig. 2 in line with the point at which the fold is to be made on that side of the work piece.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that we have provided a simple, relatively inexpensive machine which is adapted to fold and glue paper and by slight change of the machine the folding shoes may be used in folding card board folds and other articles requiring one or more parallel folds.
